Originally called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, the Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company, Sony’s history goes back to 1946 when it was founded by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. Sony started life in the crippled post was Japanese economy where Masaru and Akio made a living from repairing radios and manufacturing voltmeters with dreams of designing and manufacturing electronics.
This dream was first realized with an automatic rice cooker that enjoyed limited success but was the first in a long line of innovations that continue today.
Global thinkers Akio and Masaru understood the need for a globally recognized brand that crossed all cultural and language borders. The first Sony branded transistor radio went on sale in 1955 and the name of the company was officially changed to Sony Corporation in 1958.
In 1968 Sony UK was founded and six years later Sony became the first major Japanese company to open a factory in the UK.
Today Sony is a globally recognized brand name that says high quality, reliability and excellence. Sony’s innovative range of products includes its world famous BRAVIA TV’s, Reader eBook, Cameras and camcorders, VAIO laptops, walkman MP3 / MP4 players, home cinema, DVD recorders, Blu-ray Disc players, Hi fi, car stereo, headphones, Photo frames, bloogie’s, PlayStation, Sony Ericsson phones and a superb range of professional solutions including projectors, public displays, video security, photography, IT storage and videoconferencing.
