Toshiba Leading Innovation
Toshiba was founded by the merging of two companies in 1939, Tanaka Engineering Works, Japans first manufacturer of telegraph equipment and Hakunetsusha, Japans first producer of incandescent electric lamps and in 1899 was renamed Tokyo Electric. The merger of these two companies created a new company called Tokyo Shibaura Denki that was nicknamed and later officially renamed Toshiba.
Toshiba expanded strongly by internal growth, acquisitions and buying heavy engineering, groups created included Toshiba EMI, Toshiba International Corporation, Toshiba electrical equipment, Toshiba Chemical, Toshiba Lighting and Technology and Toshiba Carrier Corporation. Toshiba is the proud owner of several Japanese first that include radar, the TAC digital computer, transistor television and microwave oven, MRI system and laptop personal computer.
